Grand Seiko Historical Collection
57GS 1964 Reissue Self-Dater Quartz 50th Anniversary Limited Edition
At 2014 Baselworld, Grand Seiko presented two new quartz models that pay homage to a 1964 watch that is fondly remembered by devotees of the brand’s early history. Known as the “Self-dater”, it marked an important advance in the range of Grand Seiko fifty years ago, as it took the precision and luxury appeal of Grand Seiko and made them accessible to those who wanted a Grand Seiko watch that was more practical in everyday life. The 1964 “Self-dater”, as the rather awkward name implies, was the first Grand Seiko to incorporate a date window and was water resistant to 5 bars.
These models (50th anniversary limited edition) use the remarkable 9F caliber, surely the most advanced quartz watch ever created, with its high-torque, super-sealed movement and instantaneous date change.
Limited edition of 900 pieces.
About 9F Quartz
“Taking quartz into a new realm.”
Quartz caliber 9F is astonishingly accurate, with gain/loss measured in just seconds per year, but time-keeping accuracy is just one aspect of the many that place it among the finest quartz movements in the world.
The Twin Pulse Control Motor allows the use of the long and wide hands for which Grand Seiko is known, an achievement that before 9F was only possible with the high torque of a mechanical movement.
The Backlash Auto-Adjust Mechanism enables the second hand to advance precisely with no shuddering, by incorporating a hairspring device traditionally used usually only in mechanical movements.
The Instant Date Change Mechanism changes the date display in 1/2000th of a second.
The Super Sealed Cabin prevents dust entering the movement when the battery is changed and prolongs the life of the lubricating oils that ensure smooth operation of the gear train.
This is a timepiece of exceptional quality with features that were previously unimaginable in a quartz movement. Combining superior functionality and meticulous detail, Caliber 9F takes the quartz watch into a new realm.

Grand Seiko SBGV011 History :
Prior to 1960, to challenge the status of Swiss watches and change the perception of Japanese watches, Daini Seikosha and Suwa began the discussion of a product line that can match the quality of Swiss watches under the suggestion of the parent company. At the time, Suwa Seikosha Co. was in charge of manufacturing men’s watches, so it was decided that Suwa would be producing the first Grand Seiko (GS).
The first Grand Seiko was released in 1960, it was based on Seiko’s previous high-end watch, CROWN. This Grand Seiko has a 25-jewel, manual-winding, 3180 caliber, and only 36,000 units were produced. This was also the first chronometer-grade watch manufactured in Japan, and it was based on Seiko’s own chronometer standard.
Design style
The design language of the Grand Seiko was set in 1967, with the creation of Grand Seiko 44GS. The 44GS set the ground for all future Grand Seiko with nine elements. These elements help improve the legibility of the watch under different situations, and create a sharp, crisp visual impression:
- Double width index at 12 o’clock
- Multi-faceted rectangular markers
- Highly polished bezel
- Highly polished planes and two-dimensional surface
- Half recessed crown
- Flat dial
- Multi-faceted hour and minute hands
- Curved side line
- Reverse slanted bezel wall and case side
- Dress style with simple but beautiful design
- Zaratsu polishing
