SEIKO Presage SPB093J1 Special Features

Seiko Presage Arita Porcelain Dial SPB095J1
Arita porcelain

Arita porcelain. Traditional craftsmanship and modern techniques.

Arita, a small town on Kyushu, the third largest island in the southwest of Japan, came to prominence in the early 17th century when clay suitable for porcelain manufacture was discovered there and its porcelain products soon became highly prized in Japan for the high quality of their artistry.
Within a generation, Arita porcelain, also known as ‘‘Imari ware’’ after the port from which most was shipped, became known overseas and was exported, first to Europe and later across the world when Japan opened its doors to international trade in the 19th century. Today, Arita porcelain is still highly prized worldwide and many porcelain makers still thrive in the town of just 20,000 people, thanks to its long tradition of craftsmanship, to the rich variety of its products and to the uniquely Japanese sensibility that they embody.

Porcelain

Presage salutes Japanese craftsmanship in porcelain from Arita.

The heritage of Arita porcelain is respected in the color of the dials, white with a trace of blue, which was the color of the earliest Arita porcelain. The dials, which are made in Arita itself, have the rich texture and depth which is the signature of all the finest porcelain.
Arita porcelain was therefore a natural choice for the dials of a Presage collection but the Presage team needed to be 100% confident in its durability and strength. A new type of Arita porcelain material, created just three years ago, provided the solution. This new porcelain is more than four times harder than the usual material and has both the strength and flexibility required for a Presage watch dial.

Japanese craftsmanship X Seiko’s traditional watchmaking skills

The new Presage porcelain dials are made by an experienced manufacturer in Arita that has been making porcelain since 1830. Hiroyuki Hashiguchi is the master craftsman and he and his colleagues have been developing the dials with the Presage team over the past few years.

SEIKO Presage SPB093J1 Multi-stage Production Process

1. Molding

Seiko Presage Arita Molding Process

To produce the dials involves a challenging combination of skill, patience and artistry. First, the base material is put into a special mold which gives dials depth, especially in the version where the power reserve indictor is recessed into the dial with a deep cut.
The dials are dried and then fired for the first time at 1,300 degrees to harden and whiten the material.

2. Glazed / Fired

Seiko Presage Arita Glazed Process

Hashiguchi and his craftsmen then apply the glaze by hand, after which the dials are fired again, this time cementing the glaze on to the dial, a process which gives the dials their deep, rich finish and the subtle blue tinge.

3. Finishing

Seiko Presage Arita Finishing Process

Next, the holes for the date window and hands are cut by laser. Finally, the dials are then fired again to render smooth the surfaces that have been cut.

Design

Two interpretations, one with a new extended power reserve caliber.

This Presage series comprises two interpretations of the design, both of which are powered by Seiko’s high performance 6R series calibers. SPB093 offers caliber 6R27, with a power reserve indicator at the nine o’clock position and a date indicator at six o’clock. SPB095 offers a new caliber, 6R35, which delivers a power reserve of 70 hours.
The crystal glass is a dual-curved sapphire, the exhibition case back reveals the fine finishing of the 6R movements and both versions are 10 bar water resistant. Straps are crocodile leather.

SEIKO Presage SPB093J1 History :

Presage. The product of a century and more of experience

In 1913, Seiko made its first mechanical watch. 1956, Seiko made its first automatic watch. 1958 Seiko created its shock resistant system, Diashock, to preserve precision when the movement is subject to impact. 1959, Seiko invented the Magic Lever spring winding mechanism, and in 1964, it started producing balance springs in-house, utilizing its own specially developed alloy, Spron. 1967, Seiko created Japan’s first hi-beat caliber. 1969, Seiko made the world’s first automatic chronograph with vertical clutch and column wheel systems and in 2014 Seiko’s mechanical watchmaking skills were rewarded with a prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève for its hi-beat caliber.

For over a century, Seiko has developed and refined its mechanical watchmaking skills. Today, all this experience comes together in a new, all-mechanical, collection named Presage. Presage has already been successful in Japan and selected other markets for some time. Now Presage goes global and takes center stage as Seiko’s leading mechanical watch collection.

A living heritage

The new Presage collection draws its inspiration from Seiko’s heritage in mechanical watchmaking, which stretches all the way back to 1913 and the celebrated Laurel which was Seiko’s, and Japan’s, first ever wrist watch. This heritage is brought to life today in two very special Limited Edition automatic chronographs whose design echoes that of the 1913 Laurel and whose dials are made in the finest traditions of Japanese artistry, one in enamel and the other with lacquer. Both use the 8R48 caliber, which has vertical clutch and column wheel systems, and incorporates Seiko’s unique three-pointed hammer to ensure the perfect synchronization of the hands’ fly-back. Both are offered in editions of 1,000 in celebration of Seiko’s 60 years of automatic watch making and will be available in September.

Presage: A wide range of calibers, designs and tastes

Presage is a collection of broad appeal. It comprises 60 models and uses the full range of Seiko’s mechanical calibers, from the accessible 4R, through 6R to the exclusive 8R. Highlights include the 6R27 multi-hand power reserve model and a series using an entirely new version of the 4R57 caliber. This new caliber is Seiko’s first ever with a center power reserve indicator, and is available in a series of five designs, including a limited edition. Every Presage watch has 10 bar water resistance and a sapphire crystal.

Japan is a land with a long and unbroken cultural history and therefore values tradition very highly. Long-lasting beauty and long-lasting performance express the deep desires of Japanese culture and are therefore at the heart of Japanese craftsmanship. Both in design and manufacturing values, Presage belongs firmly in this tradition and offers the very highest levels of reliability and durability over time. Each Presage watch is built to last for generations.
