About Grand Seiko SBGN023
Grand Seiko Sport Collection
On the company’s 140th anniversary, a limited edition Grand Seiko GMT brings the founder’s vision to life.
Kintaro Hattori, who founded the company in 1881, had a clear vision for Seiko. He wanted it to be ‘Always on step ahead of the rest’ and nothing exemplifies better the way that the company is still loyal to this idea than Grand Seiko with its focus on advancements in the fundamentals of watchmaking. This Quartz GMT watch offers the high precision, durability and ease of use that are the very hallmarks of Grand Seiko. The muscular steel case has a ceramic bezel whose hardness protects it from scratches and ensures its lasting beauty. The yellow of the GMT hand is mirrored in the dial ring to make it easy to read the 24 hour hand at a glance and the GMT hand is illuminated by a Lumibrite that emits a different color than that of the hour and minute hands and indexes, ensuring high legibility even in the dark. The twin pulse quartz caliber 9F86 delivers the high torque needed to keep the wide hands moving precisely and offers the wearer the convenience of being able to change the time zone without stopping the seconds hand. In commemoration of 140 years of horological excellence, the back of the watch carries designed the Grand Seiko lion badge in 18K yellow gold.
Limited edition of 2,021 pieces.
About 9F Quartz
“Taking quartz into a new realm.”
Quartz caliber 9F is astonishingly accurate, with gain/loss measured in just seconds per year, but time-keeping accuracy is just one aspect of the many that place it among the finest quartz movements in the world.
The Twin Pulse Control Motor allows the use of the long and wide hands for which Grand Seiko is known, an achievement that before 9F was only possible with the high torque of a mechanical movement.
The Backlash Auto-Adjust Mechanism enables the second hand to advance precisely with no shuddering, by incorporating a hairspring device traditionally used usually only in mechanical movements.
The Instant Date Change Mechanism changes the date display in 1/2000th of a second.
The Super Sealed Cabin prevents dust entering the movement when the battery is changed and prolongs the life of the lubricating oils that ensure smooth operation of the gear train.
This is a timepiece of exceptional quality with features that were previously unimaginable in a quartz movement. Combining superior functionality and meticulous detail, Caliber 9F takes the quartz watch into a new realm.

Grand Seiko SBGN023 Special :
A Grand Seiko quartz GMT watch celebrates the 140th anniversary of the company’s foundation.
Kintaro Hattori founded his company in 1881 and led it until his death in 1934.
His philosophy was that his company should be “Always one step ahead of the rest” and nothing better proves the power of his vision than Grand Seiko with its uncompromising standard and relentless determination to push back the frontiers of fine watchmaking.
Today sees the release of a new 9F86 quartz GMT creation with gold color details that adds a new dimension to the Grand Seiko Sport collection and honors of the 140th anniversary of the foundation of the company.
A design perfect for both sport and daily use
CASE
The case is simple in design but, with its muscular shape and sharp, Zaratsu polished surfaces, it presents a powerful sports aspect. It features a ceramic bezel that is almost impervious to scratches and add a luxurious luster to the overall sporty look. The ceramic bezel also allows the time to be read instantly and accurately in the GMT 24 hour format.
DIAL
Every detail is fashioned to enhance the legibility of the time and the precision that Caliber 9F86 delivers. The two-tone dial ring allows the night and day hours indicated by the gold color GMT hand to be read instantly. This new creation is offered as a limited edition of 2,021, marking the 140th anniversary of Seiko’s founding.
CASEBACK
The caseback of the limited edition carries a lion emblem in 18k yellow gold and the watch’s individual serial number.
MOVEMENT
When Caliber 9F was created in 1993, the goal was straightforward but ambitious. As the quartz caliber for Grand Seiko, it should set new durability and precision standards and allow all the aesthetics of Grand Seiko to be fully expressed. A backlash auto-adjust mechanism eliminates any shudder in the seconds hand. The date changes in the blink of an eye. A twin-pulse control system allows the minute and seconds hands to extend right to the edge of the dial. The use of aged and individually selected quartz crystals as well as the temperature control system by IC ensure high precision of -10 to +10 seconds per year. Thanks to these unique characteristics, Caliber 9F can lay a strong claim to be the world’s highest performance quartz watch. Caliber 9F86 was created in 2018 and offers a GMT function in addition to the base characteristics of Caliber 9F.
Grand Seiko SBGN023 History :
Prior to 1960, to challenge the status of Swiss watches and change the perception of Japanese watches, Daini Seikosha and Suwa began the discussion of a product line that can match the quality of Swiss watches under the suggestion of the parent company. At the time, Suwa Seikosha Co. was in charge of manufacturing men’s watches, so it was decided that Suwa would be producing the first Grand Seiko (GS).
The first Grand Seiko was released in 1960, it was based on Seiko’s previous high-end watch, CROWN. This Grand Seiko has a 25-jewel, manual-winding, 3180 caliber, and only 36,000 units were produced. This was also the first chronometer-grade watch manufactured in Japan, and it was based on Seiko’s own chronometer standard.
Design style
The design language of the Grand Seiko was set in 1967, with the creation of Grand Seiko 44GS. The 44GS set the ground for all future Grand Seiko with nine elements. These elements help improve the legibility of the watch under different situations, and create a sharp, crisp visual impression:
- Double width index at 12 o’clock
- Multi-faceted rectangular markers
- Highly polished bezel
- Highly polished planes and two-dimensional surface
- Half recessed crown
- Flat dial
- Multi-faceted hour and minute hands
- Curved side line
- Reverse slanted bezel wall and case side
- Dress style with simple but beautiful design
- Zaratsu polishing
